Crossing a well lit, lightly trafficked street is not an act of bravery, though crossing a poorly lit or busy one might be; the difference is in whether there is a risk. It matters whether a thing ought to be scary when we assess the bravery of the act. Mark Twain is credited with the first recorded version of an idea that has been shared by FDR and Nelson Mandela in different words: Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear\u2014not absence of fear. <\/strong>Roosevelt is credited with adding that courage is “assessment that something else is more important than fear.” This Sunday we will reflect on the idea that Courage is only a virtue where there is fear and how reward almost always requires facing risk.\u00a0 Music will be provided by Krista Benesch and the Community UU Choir.<\/p>\n
