Many Unitarian Universalist congregations, including CUUC, hold child dedication ceremonies for infants and children. These events serve a symbolic, ceremonial purpose much like christenings or baptisms do for other Christian denominations. The child is introduced to the congregation, which in turn pledges to nurture and support the child as part of our community.

Child dedication ceremonies are typically planned by the child’s parents, our minister, and religious education team working closely together. It can be customized, but often includes the following elements:

  •     A blessing for the life of the child
  •     An expression of the parent or parents’ hopes for the child
  •     A promise by the congregation to support and nurture the child
