Here are a few “big picture” questions we often get about CUUC:
What can I expect as a first time visitor?
If you choose to join us for a Sunday service, you’ll be greeted as you enter our building and invited to check in. You may provide your information if you’d like to receive follow up communications from us, and we’ll offer you a name tag to wear. You’ll notice all our members are wearing name tags; this helps us get to know one another more easily. We’ll provide a written program for the morning’s service, and an usher will be glad to help you find a seat in the sanctuary. We reserve seating with additional room in front for our guests using mobility aids, and assistive listening devices are available as well.
After worship services, you are welcome to stay for refreshments and conversation with us, and/or to participate in Church Chats to discuss the service and have your questions answered.
What goes on during worship services?
Many elements of our service will be familiar. We sing hymns, participate in a responsive reading, listen to a story for all ages, share a few moments of silence in prayer or meditation, and hear some inspiring words from a minister or a guest speaker. We include joys and concerns of members and friends who’ve shared with us. We’ll also pass the plate for an offering. For additional detail, visit What to Expect on Sundays or the FAQs listed here.
It’s been a while since I’ve been to church. Is anything expected of me?
Only that you relax and enjoy yourself! Chances are many folks will approach you to introduce themselves, because we love meeting newcomers and helping connect them with things that may be of interest. It’s up to you if you want to sing along with the hymns, light a candle during musical meditation, or stay afterwards for coffee and fellowship across the hall followed by chats in the sanctuary. Contributing when we pass the plate is certainly appreciated, but you are not obligated! If you have any questions or concerns, please ask us.
What’s your congregation like? Am I going to fit in?
Yes! Our members represent all ages and stages, coming from many walks of life and all corners of the world. You’ll meet people from various races and cultures, representing many faith traditions and ways of thinking. We love questions and independent thinkers, and we love opportunities to learn new things from and about one another. We’re a Welcoming Congregation, which means we pledge to be inclusive of and provide a safe and sacred space for our LGBTQ members and visitors. Take a moment to review our About Us page, our principles, and covenant. If those sound like good ideas you could live by? You’ll definitely fit in.
How could I get involved with CUUC?
There are many ways! We have opportunities for all ages, interests, and abilities. You can use the Connections menu to get some idea of our fellowship groups and volunteer needs. We all take part in the “care and feeding” of our church: the buildings, grounds, and one another, be it through time, talent, or treasure. When you visit, feel free to approach anyone and ask!
