The idea that Christmas requires one to be a Christian believer or that it has always been a holiday of high religiosity is not historically accurate. The Unitarians, known as heretics by mainstream Christianity, were the ones that “saved” Christmas here in the United States by championing such traditions as the Christmas tree, Santa Claus, and carols, to reframe the celebration to highlight themes of peace, love, and goodwill.
